Dirty Girls – D43

30 Jul

Women soccer players are dirty girls, there are numerous cases of down right disgusting displays of poor sportsmanship from rec leagues to professional matches.  The latest one features none other than Abby Wambach getting a shiner from a Colombian player in the USA’s 3-0 victory on Saturday.

The latest victim of poor sportsmanship.

I can not honestly say that I have never been a perpetrator of a dirty play or two.  There are some girls that have really gotten under my skin and I retaliated by going in unnecessarily hard on the next tackle or hip checking someone during a defensive play.  I have even gotten a few cards to remind me that I need to reign it in.

Women soccer players have to remember that our actions have long-term consequences and not just to ourselves.  Granted you may be extremely ticked off because either your team is losing, the ref made a bad call or another player fouled you and no one saw it but when you attempt to hurt another player in retaliation you risk potentially ending their soccer career and impacting their life off the pitch.  I have seen it a lot recently during my indoor games, the number of torn ACL’s and MCL’s due to dirty plays is outrageous.  Not only can they no longer participate in the sport they love but the financial cost for treatment and rehabilitation, not to mention the time they will have to take off from work, could be permanently damaging.

Some times during particularly aggressive games I try to remind players that we all have to go to work in the morning, it usually falls on deaf ears.  Kudos to Abby for keeping a level head and not being a dirty girl.

That was a dirty play did FIFA review the tape and give the gal a red card for the blatant punch in the face

From what I understand they gave her a two game ban – which will effectively end her Olympics. It seems unlikely for Colombia to make it out of group play.

Good. The gals looked. We should win it all.
